METRO Cash & Carry announces Mumbai expansion

Mumbai, 21st September 2011: METRO Cash & Carry, the global leader in self service business-to-business wholesale, today announced plans to open its second wholesale Distribution Centre in Mumbai, at Borivali by end of 2011. 

Mumbai, with the enormous opportunities it presents, has been identified as a key market for METRO Cash and Carry in India. With an investment of approximately Rs. 120 crores, the Borivali wholesale Centre will take METRO’s total investment in the state to the Rs. 240-crore mark.

Making the announcement in Mumbai today, Mr. Rajeev Bakshi, Managing Director, METRO Cash and Carry India said, “Our unique business-to-business wholesale concept has been embraced by business customers and suppliers in Mumbai. With a proactively customer-centric approach, our second Centre in the state will drive deeper engagement and benefits for our customers. On the other hand, we will continue to expand our network of local suppliers and drive benefits to the overall economy including employment generation, local procurement and training of customers and suppliers on the various aspects impacting their business.” 

METRO offers a tailored assortment to suit the needs of registered professional customers - from small and large traders, hotels and restaurants, to institutions and offices. The Borivali Centre is suitably located on the western highway for the convenience of its customers in the region. With a selling space of around 50,000 sq ft., this Centre will offer a wide assortment of over 10,000 articles (food and non-food).

METRO has created employment opportunities in the state with nearly 300 jobs through its first Distribution Centre in Mumbai. The second Centre in Borivali will add another 300 jobs (150 direct and 150 indirect) locally. METRO has a keen focus on training its employees and most of the Borivali team is currently undergoing on-the-job training at various METRO Centres across India. 

METRO is focused on supporting the growth and progress of small traders, cornershops and kirana stores. As one of METRO’s three core customer segments, significant discounts, privileges and savings are regularly offered to small traders through the METRO Bandhan Customer Loyalty programme. In addition, METRO also consistently organises specialised training programmes for each customer group, to help them remain competitive and grow in the ever-changing economic environment. The Trader Support and Partnership program assists traders in planning and redesigning their assortment, managing stocks efficiently, becoming more customer-friendly and improving several other aspects of day-to-day business. For HoReCa customers, METRO organizes Chef-o-logy, an interactive knowledge-sharing platform with renowned chefs, aimed at providing value-added services on thematic cuisine creation, food festivals and menu merchandising. Similar training programs will soon be organized for customers in Mumbai. All of these initiatives are aimed at improving METRO’s offerings to its customers, and are in turn reflected in the improved quality of products and services that are ultimately offered to the end-consumer.

With a strong focus on partnering in the growth of the state, METRO works closely with local suppliers, small and medium enterprises and farmers. As part of its agri-sourcing strategy, METRO will be opening a Collection Centre in Narayangaon, Maharashtra where farmers can sell their produce directly to METRO and get transparent pricing for their produce. These Collection Centres help farmers plan their harvest based on regularised demand cycles and with the assurance of on-time payments. METRO regularly trains local farmers on techniques of sustainable and profitable crop production, thereby helping them improve the quality of their produce. In addition, local manufacturers and suppliers are also trained to help them provide products that meet the best international quality standards.  

METRO Cash & Carry entered the Indian market in 2003. The company currently operates a total of seven wholesale Distribution Centres including two each in Bangalore and Hyderabad, and one each in Mumbai, Kolkata and Ludhiana. The Borivali Distribution Centre will be the company’s eighth wholesale Centre in India. METRO’s first wholesale Distribution Centre in Mumbai was launched in Bhandup in 2008.
